Answer: An air freight quote is estimated by applying the kg rate and minimum to chargeable weight, then adding fuel, security, origin, destination, clearance, pickup, and delivery charges.

Forwarder quote total
2392.88USD / shipment
Base air freight
1344.00 USD
Fuel + security
338.88 USD
Origin charges
140.00 USD
Destination + clearance
270.00 USD
Effective rate
9.97 USD/kg

An air freight quote is estimated by applying the kg rate and minimum to chargeable weight, then adding fuel, security, origin, destination, customs clearance, pickup, and delivery charges.

How the calculation works

This page is the canonical CargoMath page for rebuilding a forwarder-style air freight quote. It is more detailed than the air freight cost calculator and more line-item focused than the air freight price calculator.

Start with chargeable weight, which is the higher of actual gross weight and dimensional weight. Then apply the quoted air freight rate and minimum:

base air freight = max(chargeable weight kg x rate per kg, minimum air freight)
quote total = base air freight + fuel + security + origin + destination + clearance + pickup + delivery

Use the line items from your forwarder quote when available. If a fee is not part of the quote scope, leave it at zero. For example, airport-to-airport quotes usually exclude pickup, customs clearance, and final delivery, while door-to-door quotes may include them.

This calculator is for quote structure, not tariff shopping. It helps you compare two quote formats on the same basis and see the effective all-in USD/kg.

FAQ

What does an air freight quote include?

A practical forwarder quote can include base air freight, fuel surcharge, security or screening, documentation, origin handling, destination handling, customs clearance, pickup, and final delivery.

How is this different from the air freight cost calculator?

The cost calculator is a simple linehaul estimate. This quote calculator is the canonical keyword page for rebuilding a forwarder quote with origin, destination, clearance, and delivery line items.

How is this different from the air freight estimate calculator?

The estimate calculator is for early budget ranges before you have quote details. This page is for checking a real or near-final quote breakdown.

What is chargeable weight?

Chargeable weight is the higher of actual gross weight and dimensional weight. For standard air freight, dimensional weight commonly uses length x width x height in centimeters divided by 6000.

Why does a minimum air freight charge apply?

Small shipments may not generate enough revenue from kg rate alone, so the airline or forwarder applies a minimum base freight charge before surcharges and local fees.

Does customs clearance mean import duty?

No. Customs clearance is the broker service fee. Import duty, tariffs, VAT, sales tax, exams, and storage are separate landed-cost items.

Should fuel surcharge apply before or after minimum?

Forwarders vary. This calculator applies fuel to the base air freight after the minimum check, which is conservative for small shipments. Match the quote terms if your forwarder uses a different rule.

What should I compare between two quotes?

Compare the total quote scope, effective USD/kg, included services, transit time, cargo restrictions, and whether destination delivery and clearance are included.

Dated facts

As of May 2026, standard international air freight quotes for ecommerce and general cargo still commonly separate base freight, fuel surcharge, security or screening, documentation, origin handling, destination terminal charges, and optional delivery. Standard air freight dimensional weight commonly uses the 6000 cm3/kg divisor, while express courier services commonly use 5000 cm3/kg or a similar inch-pound divisor. Public 2026 rate references show China to US standard air freight often around USD 3.00 to 7.00 per chargeable kg before local charges, with higher prices for priority or door-to-door service; IATA’s February and March 2026 cargo releases also show why sellers should refresh quote inputs against current capacity and fuel conditions.

Frequently asked questions

What does an air freight quote include?
A practical forwarder quote usually includes base air freight, minimum charge, fuel surcharge, security, documentation, origin handling, destination handling, customs clearance, pickup, and delivery.
How is this different from the air freight price calculator?
This is the canonical page for quote breakdown checks. The price calculator is a simpler shipment price model when you only need rate, surcharge, and a few fees.
What weight should I enter?
Enter chargeable weight, which is the higher of actual gross weight and volumetric weight.
Why does the minimum charge matter?
Small shipments often fall below the forwarder or airline revenue floor, so the minimum replaces chargeable weight x rate.
Does this include customs duty?
No. Customs clearance is the broker service fee. Import duty, tariff, VAT, and sales tax should be added in a landed-cost calculator.
Should I include pickup and delivery?
Include them for door-to-door quote comparison. Leave them at zero for airport-to-airport quotes.
