How the calculation works

This calculator is shipment-price focused. It assumes you already know chargeable weight, then builds the price a forwarder might quote for one air freight shipment:

  1. Linehaul freight — chargeable weight kg x air rate per kg.
  2. Fuel surcharge — percentage applied to linehaul freight.
  3. Security fee — chargeable weight kg x security or screening fee per kg.
  4. Documentation fee — air waybill, export docs, or handling charge.
  5. Pickup and delivery — first-mile and final-mile trucking when included in the quote.
  6. Minimum charge — replaces the subtotal when the shipment is too small to meet the forwarder’s minimum.

If you do not know chargeable weight, calculate it first with the air freight chargeable weight calculator. The higher of actual and volumetric weight is what carriers use for pricing.

FAQ

What is included in air freight price? Typical air freight price includes the base kg rate, fuel surcharge, security or screening fees, documentation, origin handling, and sometimes pickup or delivery. Customs duty and taxes are usually separate.

Is this different from an air freight charges calculator? Yes. This page starts with known chargeable weight and estimates a price per shipment. A charges calculator may start from carton dimensions and calculate chargeable weight as part of the workflow.

What is chargeable weight? Chargeable weight is the higher of actual gross weight and volumetric weight. For standard air cargo, volumetric weight commonly uses length x width x height in centimeters divided by 6000.

Why is the effective price per kg higher than my quoted rate? The quoted rate per kg usually covers linehaul only. Fuel, security, document fees, trucking, and minimum charges raise the effective shipment price per kg.

Should I include pickup and delivery? Include them for door-to-door comparisons. Leave them at zero when comparing airport-to-airport rates or when pickup and delivery are quoted separately.

Does the calculator include customs clearance? No. Customs brokerage, duties, tariffs, import VAT, exams, and storage should be added separately for landed cost.

When does the minimum charge apply? The minimum applies when the subtotal is below the carrier or forwarder minimum. This is common for samples, small ecommerce replenishment, and shipments below about 45 to 100 kg.

  • As of May 2026, many forwarder air quotes still apply shipment minimums around USD 150 to 300 or minimum billable weights around 45 to 100 kg.
  • As of May 2026, standard air freight commonly uses the 6000 cm3/kg divisor, while express courier commonly uses 5000 cm3/kg.
  • As of May 2026, fuel and security surcharges remain quote-specific; sellers should compare all-in shipment price instead of only the headline USD/kg rate.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate air freight price?
Multiply chargeable weight by the rate per kg, then add fuel surcharge, security fee, documentation, pickup, delivery, and any minimum shipment charge.
Is this the same as an air freight charges calculator?
No. This page starts from a known chargeable weight and builds a price-per-shipment estimate. A charges calculator may calculate dimensions, chargeable weight, and charge components together.
What is chargeable weight in air freight?
Chargeable weight is the higher of actual gross weight and volumetric weight. Use an air chargeable weight calculator first if you only know carton dimensions.
What does the fuel surcharge apply to?
In this estimator, fuel surcharge applies to the base linehaul freight. Actual forwarder quotes may apply fuel differently by airline, service, or contract.
Why does a minimum charge matter?
Small shipments often cost more than chargeable weight x rate because airlines and forwarders apply a minimum billable shipment amount.
Does this include customs duty or taxes?
No. It estimates air freight price only. Import duty, VAT, customs brokerage, tariffs, and destination tax are landed-cost items outside this price estimate.
