  • Estimate only: final BCD, IGST, compensation cess, exemptions, valuation, exchange rate, and classification require Indian Customs, ICEGATE, or customs broker confirmation.
  • SWS is modeled as a percentage of BCD, not as a percentage of assessable value.
  • IGST and compensation cess are modeled on assessable value plus BCD plus SWS; product-specific cesses, anti-dumping duty, safeguard duty, and other notified duties are not included.
  • This India calculator does not use U.S. MPF, HMF, or Section 301 tariff logic.

Custom duty in India is estimated by applying Basic Customs Duty, Social Welfare Surcharge, IGST, optional compensation cess, and clearance fees to the import assessable value, but final rates and classification must be confirmed through Indian Customs, ICEGATE, or a licensed broker.

How the calculation works

For planning, start with the assessable value in INR. This is normally the CIF-based customs value after Indian Customs valuation adjustments, not a U.S. customs value and not a simple retail price.

The calculator applies this sequence:

  1. Basic Customs Duty, or BCD, equals assessable value multiplied by the BCD rate for the HS classification.
  2. Social Welfare Surcharge, or SWS, is modeled as a percentage of BCD. The common planning input is 10% of BCD.
  3. IGST base equals assessable value plus BCD plus SWS.
  4. IGST equals the IGST base multiplied by the product’s IGST rate.
  5. Optional compensation cess is applied on the same planning base as IGST when the goods are cess-bearing.
  6. Broker and handling fees are added as non-statutory local clearance costs.

Formula: BCD = AV x BCD%; SWS = BCD x SWS%; IGST base = AV + BCD + SWS; IGST = IGST base x IGST%; total estimate = BCD + SWS + IGST + compensation cess + broker fee + handling fee.

This estimator does not classify goods, apply exemptions, retrieve live CBIC exchange rates, file a Bill of Entry, or calculate anti-dumping duty, safeguard duty, countervailing duty, product-specific cesses, interest, penalties, demurrage, detention, port storage, or GST input tax credit treatment. Use it for planning only, then confirm the HS code, BCD, IGST, compensation cess, notifications, valuation, and final assessment with Indian Customs, ICEGATE, or a customs broker.

FAQ

How do I calculate custom duty in India?

Start with assessable value in INR, multiply it by the BCD rate, calculate SWS on the BCD amount, then calculate IGST on assessable value plus BCD plus SWS. Add compensation cess only when the goods are subject to it, then add broker and handling fees for a landed-cost estimate.

What is assessable value for India customs?

Assessable value is the customs value used by Indian Customs for duty assessment. For import planning it is usually based on CIF value in INR, with additions or adjustments for valuation rules, assists, royalties, related-party issues, or other dutiable elements where applicable.

Is Social Welfare Surcharge charged on assessable value?

No. In this planning model, SWS is calculated as a percentage of Basic Customs Duty. The default input is 10% of BCD, but the payable amount can be affected by exemptions and current notifications.

Is IGST calculated before or after customs duty?

IGST is calculated after BCD and SWS in the normal planning sequence. The IGST base used here is assessable value plus BCD plus SWS.

When does compensation cess apply to imports into India?

Compensation cess applies only to notified categories. It is common to check it for goods such as certain tobacco products, motor vehicles, coal, aerated drinks, and other cess-bearing items, but the exact treatment depends on current GST and customs notifications.

Which BCD rate should I enter?

Enter the Basic Customs Duty rate for the correct HS classification, origin, exemption status, and current tariff notification. A small HS-code difference can materially change the duty estimate.

Does this calculator include Indian broker and handling fees?

Yes. Broker and handling fields are included for planning because a buyer’s landed import cash outlay is often higher than statutory duty alone. These fields are not customs duties and should be replaced with the quote from your CHA, broker, forwarder, CFS, or carrier.

Can this replace ICEGATE or a customs broker?

No. The calculator is a planning tool. The final Bill of Entry assessment, exchange rate, valuation, exemption, notification, classification, and payable duty must be confirmed through Indian Customs, ICEGATE, or a licensed customs broker.

Does this use U.S. MPF or HMF?

No. India import duty does not use U.S. Merchandise Processing Fee or Harbor Maintenance Fee logic. This tool is India-specific and uses BCD, SWS, IGST, optional compensation cess, and local clearance fee inputs.

Dated facts

As of May 13, 2026, ICEGATE remains the Indian Customs electronic gateway used for trade services including Bill of Entry workflows and duty payment, and CBIC/ICEGATE references should be checked for live tariff, exchange-rate, and notification details before filing.

As of May 13, 2026, Social Welfare Surcharge on imported goods is commonly planned at 10% of the relevant customs duty amount, with CBIC guidance noting that SWS is calculated on customs duties rather than directly on the import value.

As of May 13, 2026, imported goods may also require IGST and, for notified categories, GST compensation cess; these rates are product-specific and should be checked against current GST rate schedules and customs notifications.

Frequently asked questions

How is customs duty calculated in India?
For planning, start with assessable value in INR, calculate Basic Customs Duty on that value, calculate Social Welfare Surcharge on BCD, then calculate IGST and any compensation cess on assessable value plus BCD plus SWS.
What is assessable value for India imports?
Assessable value is the customs value used for duty calculation, usually based on CIF value in INR with valuation additions or adjustments required by Indian Customs.
Is SWS calculated on CIF value?
No. This calculator models Social Welfare Surcharge as a percentage of Basic Customs Duty, not as a direct percentage of assessable value.
What IGST rate should I enter?
Enter the IGST rate that applies to the goods under the current GST rate schedule for the HS classification. Common rates exist, but the correct rate depends on the product.
When should I use compensation cess?
Use compensation cess only for goods where GST compensation cess applies, such as specific tobacco, automobile, coal, aerated beverage, or other notified categories.
Can this replace an Indian customs broker?
No. The estimator cannot classify goods, validate exemptions, apply live exchange rates, or confirm final duty. Confirm with Indian Customs, ICEGATE, or a licensed customs broker.
Does this include U.S. MPF or HMF?
No. India import calculations do not use U.S. MPF or HMF. This tool uses India-specific BCD, SWS, IGST, optional compensation cess, and local clearance fee inputs.
