Air Freight Charges Calculator - Weight, Rate, Fuel, Fees

Tool creator: Helenpeng, CEO of Honourocean Shipping Co., Ltd., working in logistics since 2009. About CargoMath · Honourocean

Answer: Air freight charges are estimated by calculating chargeable weight, multiplying it by the rate per kg, then adding fuel surcharge, security fees, fixed fees, and any minimum charge.

Air freight charges are estimated by calculating chargeable weight, multiplying by the lane rate per kg, adding fuel and handling fees, and applying any minimum charge.

How the calculation works

The calculator first converts carton dimensions into volumetric weight. It compares volumetric weight with actual gross weight and uses the higher number as chargeable weight. Then it prices the freight:

base freight = chargeable weight kg x rate per kg
fuel surcharge = base freight x fuel %
security charge = chargeable weight kg x security fee per kg
estimated total = max(base + fuel + security + fixed fees, minimum charge)

This gives a linehaul-focused air freight estimate. It is useful for pre-RFQ budgeting, but it does not replace a live forwarder quote.

FAQ

What charges are included?

The tool includes chargeable weight, base air freight rate, fuel surcharge, security fee per kg, origin document fee, and a minimum charge.

What is not included?

It does not include customs duty, import tax, customs entry, destination airport handling, storage, truck delivery, insurance, or special-cargo surcharges.

What is chargeable weight?

Chargeable weight is the higher of actual gross weight and volumetric weight. Air freight commonly calculates volumetric weight as dimensions in cm divided by 6000.

What rate per kg should I enter?

Enter the base air freight rate for the lane, not the all-in landed cost. For China to US general cargo, forwarder quotes often show a per-kg air rate plus fuel and local fees.

Why is there a fuel surcharge?

Airlines and forwarders adjust fuel as jet fuel indexes move. Some quotes bundle it into an all-in rate; if yours does, enter 0 for fuel surcharge.

When does the minimum charge apply?

The minimum applies when the calculated freight is below the forwarder’s revenue floor. This is common for shipments below about 45 kg chargeable weight.

Can I use this for DHL or FedEx?

Use the 5000 divisor for express-style pricing, but courier quotes also include parcel zone tables, remote-area fees, residential fees, and account discounts that this calculator does not model.

How accurate is the estimate?

For general cargo on stable lanes, it is normally a planning estimate within about 10 to 20 percent before customs and destination delivery. Peak season, batteries, dangerous goods, and oversized pieces can move the final quote materially.

Dated facts

As of May 2026, general-cargo air freight rates from major China gateways to US gateways commonly sit around 4.50 to 7.50 USD/kg for 100 to 500 kg shipments in non-peak periods. Fuel surcharges on forwarder quotes commonly range from about 18% to 28%, and small air shipments often carry an 80 to 200 USD minimum charge.

Frequently asked questions

What charges are included in this calculator?
It includes chargeable weight, rate per kg, fuel surcharge, security fee per kg, origin document fee, and a minimum charge floor.
How does it calculate chargeable weight?
The calculator converts dimensions to volumetric weight, compares that with actual gross weight, and uses the higher number.
Does this include customs duty and taxes?
No. Customs duty, import tax, MPF, destination delivery, and warehouse handling are separate landed-cost items.
What divisor should I use?
Use 6000 for standard air freight and 5000 for express courier unless your forwarder gives a different rule.
Why can a small shipment cost more than the math suggests?
Air freight has fixed handling and paperwork costs, so forwarders often apply an 80 to 200 USD minimum charge for small shipments.
How close is this to a real air quote?
For general cargo on stable lanes, a weight x rate model is often within 10 to 20 percent before destination and customs charges.
