Answer: An online air freight calculator estimates planning cost by calculating chargeable weight, multiplying by a route or custom USD/kg rate, applying minimum freight, and adding fuel, security, documentation, pickup, delivery, and accessorial charges.

Planning estimator only. It does not query live airline, courier, or forwarder pricing.

An online air freight calculator estimates planning cost by calculating chargeable weight, multiplying it by a route or custom USD/kg rate, applying minimum freight, and adding fuel, security, documentation, pickup, delivery, and accessorial charges.

How the calculation works

This page is a planning estimator, not live online carrier pricing. It does not connect to airline, express courier, or freight-forwarder rate systems. Use it to model a budget before requesting a real quote.

The calculator first finds shipment volume from either total CBM or carton dimensions. Volumetric weight equals volume in cubic centimeters divided by the air freight divisor, commonly 6000 for standard air freight. Chargeable weight is the higher of actual gross weight and volumetric weight.

The freight line is chargeable weight times the route/service rate per kg, or a custom rate if you choose a custom route. If that freight line is below the minimum freight charge, the minimum is used instead. Fuel surcharge, security fee, documentation, pickup, delivery, and accessorials are then added to produce the planning total.

Use the canonical Air Freight Cost Calculator for the narrower chargeable-weight x rate formula. Use the Air Freight Chargeable Weight Calculator when you only need billable kilograms, and the Air Freight Rates Calculator when you need lane and service planning rate bands.

FAQ

Is this online air freight calculator live carrier pricing?

No. This is a planning estimator for sellers and importers. It does not query airline, courier, or forwarder systems, and it should not be treated as a bookable quote.

How is online air freight cost calculated?

Air freight planning cost is usually estimated as chargeable weight x rate per kg, with a minimum freight charge applied when the shipment is small. Fuel, security, documentation, pickup, delivery, and accessorial charges are then added.

What is chargeable weight in air freight?

Chargeable weight is the higher of actual gross weight and volumetric weight. Light bulky cargo can be billed on volume even when its actual scale weight is lower.

Which divisor should I use?

Use 6000 for standard air freight unless your quote or rate sheet specifies another divisor. Some courier-style and stricter air products use 5000, and special cargo can have different billing rules.

Can I enter total CBM instead of dimensions?

Yes. If total CBM is entered, the calculator uses that value. If total CBM is blank, it calculates CBM from length, width, height, and carton count.

What is included in the estimate?

The estimate includes route or custom freight rate, minimum freight, fuel surcharge, security fee, documentation fee, pickup, delivery, and accessorial charges that you enter.

What is not included?

Customs duty, VAT, import tax, MPF, HMF, cargo insurance, storage, customs exams, demurrage, dangerous goods handling, battery surcharge, and live peak-season capacity changes are not included unless you add them as accessorials.

How is this different from an air freight cost calculator?

The Air Freight Cost Calculator is the canonical narrower page for chargeable weight, rate, fuel surcharge, and minimum charge. This online calculator adds planning presets and common pickup, delivery, and accessorial fields.

How accurate is this estimate?

It is usually useful for early budget planning, purchase-order checks, and landed-cost scenarios. A live quote can differ because of exact airport pair, commodity, dimensions, airline space, fuel tables, remote addresses, and seasonal capacity.

Dated facts

As of May 13, 2026, standard international air freight commonly uses a 6000 cm3/kg divisor, while express-courier-style dimensional weight often uses 5000 cm3/kg or carrier-specific formulas.

As of May 13, 2026, China-to-US general cargo planning rates for 100-500 kg shipments often need lane-specific validation because rate sheets, fuel surcharge tables, airline capacity, and peak-season premiums can change weekly.

As of May 13, 2026, this page is intentionally positioned as an online planning estimator and should internally relate to /tools/air-freight-cost-calculator/, /tools/air-freight-chargeable-weight-calculator/, and /tools/air-freight-rates-calculator/ rather than claiming live carrier pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Is this online air freight calculator live carrier pricing?
No. It is a planning estimator. It does not query airline, express courier, or forwarder systems for live sell rates.
How does the calculator estimate air freight cost?
It calculates volumetric weight from dimensions or CBM, compares it with actual weight to get chargeable weight, multiplies by a route or custom rate per kg, applies the minimum freight charge, then adds fuel, security, documentation, pickup, delivery, and accessorials.
What divisor should I use?
Use 6000 for standard air freight unless your forwarder specifies another divisor. Express courier and some dense-rate products may use 5000 or a carrier-specific rule.
Can I enter total CBM instead of carton dimensions?
Yes. If total CBM is entered, the calculator uses that volume instead of the per-carton length, width, height, and carton count.
What charges are included?
The model includes freight, fuel surcharge, security fee, documentation, pickup, delivery, accessorials, and a minimum freight floor.
What is excluded from this estimate?
Customs duty, import tax, VAT, customs exams, storage, cargo insurance, dangerous goods fees, battery handling, and live peak-season capacity premiums are not included unless you add them as accessorials.
How is this different from the air freight cost calculator?
The air freight cost calculator is the canonical narrower formula for chargeable weight x rate plus surcharge and minimum. This online calculator is a broader planning screen with route presets and pickup, delivery, and accessorial fields.
Should I still request a quote?
Yes. Use this to plan landed-cost scenarios and purchase-order budgets, then validate the route, commodity, dimensions, and service level with a live freight quote before booking.
