Freight linear feet is the trailer floor length your palletized or crated freight occupies after the load is arranged across the trailer width, so it helps decide whether the move should quote as LTL, volume LTL, partial truckload, or full truckload.

How the calculation works

The calculator starts with the floor footprint of one handling unit: length x width. It converts the footprint to inches, tests both practical orientations inside the trailer width, and keeps the orientation that uses the fewest trailer feet. For each orientation, it finds how many pieces fit across the trailer, divides the effective floor-piece count by that number, rounds up to full rows, and multiplies rows by the footprint depth along the trailer.

Stackability changes the effective floor-piece count. Twelve non-stackable 48 x 40 inch pallets may need twelve floor positions; if they can safely stack two high, they need six floor positions before the row calculation. The result is a planning estimate for tendering freight, not a substitute for carrier rules on freight class, accessorials, axle weight, blocking, bracing, or damage risk.
