Answer: CBM can be converted to metric tons only when you provide cargo density in kg/m3 or a stowage factor in CBM per MT.

CBM cannot convert to metric tons by itself. Enter cargo density or a stowage factor so the tool can convert volume into physical weight.

Volumetric planning reference, not a physical MT conversion.

650 kg/m3 is equivalent to 1.538 CBM per metric ton.
  • CBM is volume; MT is mass. A valid conversion needs cargo density or stowage factor.
  • Use packed cargo density when packaging, pallets, voids, or dunnage materially change shipment weight.
  • Air and express volumetric weights are billing references only; they are not physical mass.
  • A stowage factor above 1 CBM/MT usually means ocean LCL may bill by measurement.

CBM converts to metric tons only when you know the cargo density in kg/m3 or the stowage factor in CBM per metric ton.

How the calculation works

CBM is cubic volume, while MT is metric-ton weight, so the calculator first needs a density assumption. If you enter density, the formula is metric tons = CBM x quantity x density kg/m3 / 1000. If you enter stowage factor, the formula is metric tons = CBM x quantity / stowage factor CBM/MT.

Use gross packed density for freight planning when cartons, pallets, dunnage, or void fill affect the shipment weight. The air and ocean comparison numbers are shown only as planning references because chargeable weight rules are billing methods, not physical conversions.

FAQ

Can CBM be converted to MT directly?

No. CBM measures space and MT measures mass, so a direct conversion is impossible without cargo density or stowage factor.

What is the CBM to MT formula with density?

Use MT = CBM x quantity x density kg/m3 / 1000. For example, 10 CBM at 600 kg/m3 equals 6.000 MT.

What is the CBM to MT formula with stowage factor?

Use MT = CBM x quantity / stowage factor CBM/MT. For example, 10 CBM with a 2.0 CBM/MT stowage factor equals 5.000 MT.

What density should I use for freight planning?

Use gross packed density, not only product material density, when packaging or pallets materially change the shipment weight.

Why does the tool show an ocean W/M reference?

Ocean LCL quotes often compare measurement volume against weight tons. The W/M reference helps you see whether CBM or MT may drive the revenue-ton estimate.

Is air volumetric weight the same as metric tons?

No. Air volumetric weight is a billing reference based on a divisor such as 6000 cm3/kg; it is not the physical mass of the cargo.

What if I do not know the density?

Ask the supplier for packed gross weight and CBM, weigh a sample carton, or use a documented commodity stowage factor. Do not treat a generic CBM-to-MT ratio as universal.

Should I enter one carton CBM or total shipment CBM?

Either works if quantity is set correctly. Enter one lot’s CBM with the matching quantity, or enter total shipment CBM and leave quantity as 1.

Dated facts

As of May 13, 2026, common air-freight planning still often uses a 6000 cm3/kg divisor, equal to about 166.67 kg per CBM, while express and courier contexts may use 5000 cm3/kg, equal to 200 kg per CBM.

As of May 13, 2026, many ocean LCL quotes still use W/M revenue-ton logic where 1 CBM is compared with 1 metric ton, and the higher revenue-ton basis can drive the ocean freight line item.

Frequently asked questions

Can CBM convert to metric tons directly?
No. CBM is volume and metric tons are mass, so the conversion needs cargo density or stowage factor.
What formula does this calculator use?
With density, MT = CBM x kg/m3 / 1000. With stowage factor, MT = CBM / CBM per MT.
What density should I enter?
Use gross packed density when the result is for freight planning, including packaging, pallets, and void fill.
