Amazon FBA CBM Calculator — Carton & Pallet Volume for FBA Inbound Shipments
Answer: FBA CBM = (carton length × width × height in meters) × carton quantity. For cartons in cm, divide L × W × H by 1,000,000 to get one carton, then multiply by quantity.
What is FBA CBM?
FBA CBM is the total outer packed volume of your Amazon FBA inbound shipment in cubic meters (m³). It is the number your freight forwarder quotes on for the China-to-FBA leg — whether you ship floor-loaded cartons, palletized LTL, ocean LCL, or full container.
How the calculator works
For each carton or pallet type, enter outer length, width, height, and quantity. The calculator converts your unit (cm, in, m, or ft) to meters, multiplies L × W × H to get one carton’s volume, then multiplies by quantity. Add a new line for each distinct carton or pallet size, and the calculator sums them.
For palletized loads, include the pallet height itself (typically 15 cm / 6 in) in the height field so the CBM reflects what the carrier actually loads.
CBM formula by unit
| Input unit | Formula for one carton |
|---|---|
| cm | (L × W × H) ÷ 1,000,000 |
| m | L × W × H |
| in | L × W × H × 0.0000164 |
| ft | L × W × H × 0.0283168 |
Multiply by carton or pallet quantity for the shipment total.
Worked example: FBA replenishment shipment
You are shipping 240 master cartons from Shenzhen to ONT8 (Ontario, CA). Each carton is 50 × 40 × 40 cm.
- One carton volume: 50 × 40 × 40 = 80,000 cm³ = 0.08 m³
- Total CBM: 0.08 × 240 = 19.2 CBM
- That puts you above the LCL break-even — a 20ft FCL (~28 CBM usable) is probably cheaper per CBM than LCL at this volume.
If the same 240 cartons are stacked onto US-spec pallets at 30 cartons per pallet:
- 8 pallets, each 122 × 102 × ~165 cm (including pallet) = 2.05 CBM per pallet
- Total CBM: 2.05 × 8 = 16.4 CBM (volume is lower because pallet stacking is tighter than my carton-by-carton math here; in reality the loose volume is usually 5–10% lower than the cargo it contains)
FBA inbound mode break-even (as of May 2026)
| Total CBM | Total weight | Cheapest mode |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1 CBM | Under 100 kg | Express courier direct to FBA |
| 1 – 3 CBM | 100 – 400 kg | Air freight via forwarder |
| 3 – 15 CBM | 400 – 2000 kg | Ocean LCL + LTL to FBA |
| 15 – 28 CBM | 2000 – 8000 kg | 20ft FCL + LTL to FBA |
| 28 – 65 CBM | 8000 – 18000 kg | 40ft HQ FCL direct to FBA |
These are starting points. Lane, season, FBA placement spread, and your supplier’s pallet stackability all shift the numbers.
FBA carton & pallet rules (cheat sheet, May 2026)
| Rule | SPD carton | Palletized LTL |
|---|---|---|
| Max single side | 25 in (63.5 cm) | 60 in stacked height |
| Max weight | 50 lb (22.7 kg) | 1500 lb per pallet |
| Pallet footprint | n/a | 48 × 40 in (US) or 1200 × 1000 mm (EU/UK) |
| Label | FBA box ID + carrier label | Pallet placard + box IDs |
The calculator doesn’t enforce these — it just gives you the volume number. Check Amazon Seller Central for the live rule set before finalizing your packing list.
FAQs
Should I use master carton or inner carton dimensions?
Use master (outer) carton dimensions — the box your supplier ships. Freight forwarders bill on what they load, not what’s inside.
Do I include the pallet itself in the height?
Yes. Standard wood pallets add ~15 cm (6 in) of height. If your cargo stacks to 150 cm and sits on a 15 cm pallet, enter 165 cm total height — that is what the forwarder measures and what fits inside the container.
How does CBM affect my FBA inbound freight quote?
Forwarders quote ocean LCL on CBM directly (USD per CBM × CBM, with a 1 CBM minimum). For air, they quote per chargeable kg, but CBM still drives the volumetric weight conversion (CBM × 167 for IATA air, CBM × 200 for express). For FCL, CBM determines whether you fit a 20ft (~28 CBM) or 40ft HQ (~65 CBM).
What is the difference between this and the general CBM calculator?
Same math, FBA-specific guidance. The general CBM calculator works for any freight shipment. This one adds FBA inbound break-even guidance, carton/pallet rules, and a worked example tuned for Amazon sellers.
Can I use this for FBA shipments to Europe or the UK?
Yes — the CBM math is unit-agnostic. The break-even table changes slightly for EU/UK (EFN and Pan-European FBA have different inbound flows), but the volume number is the same.

Dated facts
As of May 2026, Amazon FBA still bills inbound placement on units and dimensional weight, not CBM. The freight leg from origin to FBA is what your forwarder quotes on CBM. Standard US FBA pallets remain 48 × 40 in, max 60 in stacked height, and 1500 lb gross. SPD carton limits remain 25 in maximum on any single side and 50 lb max weight per carton. The IATA 6000 cm³/kg volumetric divisor and the LCL 1000 kg/m³ chargeable conversion are unchanged.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does CBM matter for Amazon FBA shipments?
- CBM is the volume number freight forwarders quote ocean LCL and palletized air on. For FBA, every inbound shipment from your supplier in Asia needs both a CBM number (for the freight quote) and a chargeable-weight number (for air/express comparison). The CBM also drives FCL vs LCL decisions — under ~15 CBM is usually LCL, above is usually FCL.
- Should I enter carton dimensions or product dimensions?
- Always use outer master carton dimensions — the dimensions of the box your supplier actually ships. Freight is priced on what the carrier loads onto the pallet or container, not the size of the product inside. The Amazon FBA carton-size limit (max 25 inches on any side, max 50 lb) is a separate Amazon-side rule, not a freight rule.
- How do I calculate CBM for a palletized FBA shipment?
- For palletized shipments, calculate CBM based on the pallet footprint and total stacked height including the pallet itself. A standard 48 × 40 × 60 inch palletized load = 48 × 40 × 60 × 0.0000164 ≈ 1.89 CBM per pallet. Multiply by pallet count for the shipment total. FBA accepts both 48 × 40 (US) and 1200 × 1000 mm (EU/UK) pallet footprints.
- What is the FBA carton vs pallet break-even?
- As of May 2026, FBA SPD (Small Parcel Delivery) by floor-loaded carton is cheapest under ~150 kg total weight or ~1.5 CBM. Above that, LTL palletized inbound is usually cheaper per unit. Above ~10 CBM or 6 pallets, ocean LCL or FCL from origin direct to an FBA prep center beats domestic LTL.
- Does Amazon charge me for CBM or for weight?
- Amazon does not directly charge inbound CBM — the freight forwarder does, on the China-to-US (or Vietnam/India-to-US) leg. Amazon charges you placement fees and inbound processing on top once the shipment hits an FBA receive center, billed on unit and weight, not CBM.
- How many FBA cartons fit in a 40ft HQ container?
- A 40ft HQ holds about 65–68 CBM usable. For a typical FBA master carton of 50 × 40 × 40 cm (0.08 CBM), that is roughly 800–850 cartons. Real-world fit drops 10–15% with palletization since pallets waste vertical space and require aisle clearance.
