Answer: Air freight volume is calculated from packed carton dimensions and quantity, then converted to volume weight with the carrier divisor when needed for quoting.

Air freight volume is the packed shipment size in cubic meters, calculated from outer carton dimensions and quantity, then often converted to air volume weight for quoting.

How the calculation works

For each carton or pallet type, measure the outside length, width, and height after packing. Convert those dimensions to meters, multiply them together, and multiply by quantity.

total CBM = length m x width m x height m x quantity

Air freight is not normally billed on CBM alone. Forwarders convert the volume into volume weight, then compare that value with actual gross weight. With the common 6000 cm3/kg divisor, 1 CBM is equivalent to about 166.7 kg of air volume weight. With a 5000 divisor, 1 CBM is equivalent to 200 kg.

air volume weight kg = total CBM x 1,000,000 / divisor

Use carton, crate, or pallet dimensions as tendered to the carrier. Do not use product-only dimensions unless the product ships without export packaging.

FAQ

How do I calculate air freight volume?

Multiply the packed length, width, and height of one carton, convert the result to cubic meters, then multiply by the number of cartons.

Is air freight charged by CBM?

Usually no. Air freight quotes are based on chargeable weight. CBM is converted to volume weight and compared with actual gross weight; the higher number is normally billed.

What divisor should I use for air freight volume?

Use 6000 cm3/kg for standard IATA-style air freight planning unless the forwarder gives a different divisor. Use 5000 for many express courier shipments.

What is 1 CBM equal to in air freight?

At a 6000 divisor, 1 CBM equals about 166.7 kg of volume weight. At a 5000 divisor, 1 CBM equals 200 kg.

Should I include pallets in the volume?

Yes. If the cargo ships on pallets, include the pallet footprint and finished pallet height, including wrap, corner boards, and any overhang.

Why does a small CBM shipment still receive a high air quote?

Air quotes include minimum charges, airline handling, screening, fuel/security surcharges, customs, and delivery. CBM only explains the space component.

Can I use this for Amazon FBA air freight?

Yes. It is useful for estimating carton volume before asking for a China to Amazon FBA air quote, but the final quote still needs actual gross weight, destination warehouse, and cargo details.

What if my cartons have different sizes?

Calculate each carton type separately, then add the CBM totals. Mixed cartons should not be averaged unless they are truly close in size.

Dated facts

As of May 2026, standard international air freight planning still commonly uses a 6000 cm3/kg divisor, which makes 1 CBM approximately 166.7 kg of volume weight. Many express courier and ecommerce parcel services use a stricter 5000 cm3/kg divisor, making 1 CBM approximately 200 kg. Forwarders may also apply minimum chargeable weights, measurement rounding, and oversized-piece rules, so the calculator should be used for planning before a live quote rather than as a carrier tariff.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate air freight volume?
Multiply packed length, width, and height, convert the result to cubic meters, then multiply by carton quantity.
Is air freight priced by CBM?
Air quotes usually use chargeable weight, not CBM alone. CBM is converted to volume weight and compared with actual gross weight.
What air freight divisor should I use?
Use 6000 cm3/kg for standard air freight unless your forwarder specifies a different divisor. Use 5000 for many express courier services.
What dimensions should I enter?
Use the outer packed carton or pallet dimensions as tendered to the carrier, including bulge, wrap, and pallet height.
What does 1 CBM mean for air freight?
At a 6000 divisor, 1 CBM converts to about 166.7 kg of volume weight. At a 5000 divisor, 1 CBM converts to 200 kg.
Can I use this for Amazon FBA air shipments?
Yes, use it for planning carton volume before quoting FBA air freight, then confirm final chargeable weight with your forwarder.
