How Should Buyers Evaluate a MIM Supplier Before RFQ?
Short answer: Before RFQ, buyers should verify a MIM supplier in three layers: public business evidence, process capability evidence, and RFQ readiness. The goal is not to select the final supplier yet, but to remove weak candidates before engineering time is wasted.
A weak MIM RFQ process burns time in two places: engineering review and tooling iteration. The practical job before RFQ is to reject suppliers that can quote but cannot hold the process, documentation, or export discipline required for production.
1. Separate identity checks from capability checks
A supplier can have a real factory, export history, and a polished website and still be a poor fit for your part. Buyers should not confuse company existence with MIM process capability.
The first pass should answer only basic legitimacy questions: is this a real operating business, does it export, does it publish enough material to trace its activity, and does the sales process stay technically coherent.

6. What the pre-RFQ phase should produce
The correct output of this phase is a shortlist, not a supplier award. After screening, the buyer should know which suppliers are credible enough to receive drawings, NDA, and a formal RFQ pack.
